Government statistics show that the theft of cars is decreasing, but the theft of personal possessions from cars is still a major problem. There are many security measures available at the moment to protect your car from theft:

The new and improved security features mean that your car is less likely to be stolen. However, this also means that thieves are more likely to target your keys, and put your personal safety at risk. With the number of cars in the UK increasing, it is important to avoid accidents. There are a number of precautions you can take to look after your personal safety:
- The British Crime Survey shows that 40% of vehicle crimes happen outside the home. Make sure you are vigilant when you leave your house to go to your car.
- Keep your personal belongings out of sight when you leave your car. Items such as sports bags, handbags and shopping bags left in you vehicle entice thieves to steal from your car.
- Don't drink and drive. Alcohol lowers your reaction time and as little as 2 units of alcohol can put you over the limit. You are more likely to have an accident or face a heavy fine if you drink and drive.
- Always keep your eye on the road and concentrate on driving, don't get distracted doing other things. Even in a traffic jam it is important to focus on the road, don't eat, put on make-up or use your mobile when driving.
- It is important, especially for women, to find a safe place to park. Try and park in a place that is well-lit, with security cameras and warden patrolled when possible.
- If you are a women and you breakdown in an unsecured area, there are measures you can take to look after your personal safety. Lock your doors, call for help if you have a mobile and sit in the passenger seat to make it look like you are not alone.
- Always remember, never leave valuables in your car and lock your car.
